The KoKiVa project develops work life visits for upper secondary school students from the perspectives of educators, guidance staff, and companies. We also consider it important to highlight the wishes that upper secondary school students have for work life visits and their needs regarding educational and career choices.
Research (Kaleva et al. 2019; Kunnari et al. 2022) has shown that education choices at upper secondary school and university are segregated by gender. Furthermore, research has shown that the labour market is segregated by gender (OECD 2019). Additionally, the best known professions to upper secondary aged students are teacher, police officer, firefighter and lawyer (Kaleva et al. 2019). As the labour market changes, new fields of employment and new professions emerge at a growing rate. This challenges education to keep up with the changes. What is important is to listen to young people for their needs and wishes.
In the videos below, upper secondary school students tell share their wishes for study counsellors and subject teachers as well as employer representatives.
